California Rockhound

The California Rockhound expedition at the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center is a geologist’s dream, tailored for explorers eager to unravel the mysteries of rock formation while enjoying hands-on learning. As part of their popular School Learning Expeditions, participants dive into the rock cycle—examining how igneous rocks emerge from cooling magma, how sedimentary stones form via wind and water erosion, and how metamorphic rocks evolve under intense heat and pressure. Alongside this immersive field experience, students gain insight into the vital role rocks and minerals play as California’s natural resources. Each explorer leaves with a curated collection of eight rocks and eight mineral samples, offering a tangible reminder of the geological forces that have shaped both the land and our daily lives. This expedition meets Next Generation Science Standards in earth science and fosters a lasting appreciation for the planet’s dynamic structure.
This Expedition offers Student Explorers an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the rock cycle. Covered topics include rock formation from magma (igneous rocks), water and wind erosion (sedimentary rocks), and heat and pressure (metamorphic rocks). Also included is a discussion of the important roles rocks and minerals play as a natural resource. Each Student Explorer receives a set of eight rocks and eight minerals to take home.
Cost - $12.50 per Explorer
