Learning Expeditions
JMDC’s School Learning Expeditions are immersive, standards-aligned, and hands-on experiences that bring classroom science and social studies to life on our 82-acre campus. Programs range from our signature Rock Collecting with the Dinosaurs School Learning Expedition, where Student Explorers discover fun facts about rocks, minerals, fossils, and dinosaurs. Everyone makes a personal collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils to take home. At Dinosaur Dig, Student Explorers unearth a 25’ Allosaurus replica and explore paleontology basics. Fossils Through Time, Geology of California, and California Rockhound all dive into earth science and regional geology with real specimens. History-focused options like Gold Fever! and Early Man Archaeology Dig blend hands-on exploration with California history. Other expeditions—such as Pictograph: Language & Art, and Adventurers in Adobe, encourage creativity, cultural understanding, and language arts. Life sciences are discussed in Critters: How and Why and Ecosystems, Genetics and Critters developing an ecological curiosity and an understanding of the animals around us. Each School Learning Expedition is mapped directly to California’s Next Generation Science and History/Social Studies standards. These expeditions engage multiple learning styles: students dig, paint, pan, build, observe living creatures, and collect real samples—all while fulfilling core educational requirements.
